Georgian Fireplaces and Fire Surrounds
The Georgian period (1714–1830) transformed British architecture and interior design, establishing principles of balance, proportion and classical elegance that continue to influence homes today. Fireplaces became an integral architectural feature, designed not simply to provide warmth but to complement the symmetry and refinement of the room.
Inspired by the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, Georgian fire surrounds are characterised by carefully considered proportions, restrained ornamentation and finely executed detailing. Columns, friezes, carved tablets and elegant mouldings became defining features, while materials such as marble and limestone reflected both the craftsmanship and architectural ambitions of the period.
As Georgian architecture evolved, so too did fireplace design. Early Georgian fireplaces tended to be relatively simple, whereas later designs, influenced by architects such as Robert Adam and Sir William Chambers, introduced greater refinement through delicate classical motifs, decorative carving and beautifully balanced compositions. These later fireplaces remain among the most enduring and recognisable designs in British interiors.
Our Georgian collection includes faithful interpretations of many of these architectural styles, from understated bolection surrounds through to richly carved statement fireplaces inspired by grand country houses and historic townhouses. Designs including The Grosvenor, The Sandringham and The Cumberland demonstrate the breadth and elegance of the Georgian tradition.
Whether you’re restoring a listed property, renovating a Georgian townhouse or introducing classical character into a contemporary interior, selecting the right fireplace is as much about proportion as style. Mike and Paul can advise on the most appropriate design, material and scale for your project, ensuring the fireplace feels entirely at home within its architectural setting.
For projects requiring something unique, we also create bespoke reproductions from original drawings, photographs or reference images, allowing historically significant fireplaces to be recreated with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Choosing a period fireplace is about more than selecting a historical style. Proportion, scale, material and architectural context all influence whether a fireplace feels authentic within a room. If you’re restoring a period property or introducing traditional character into a contemporary home, we’re always happy to discuss the options and help you identify the most appropriate design.

Thanks So Much For a Great Job
Paul and the team at English Fireplaces helped design and install two new fireplaces in our home and we are absolutely delighted with the results. It has been an absolute pleasure working with English Fireplaces throughout – they (and their installers) are helpful, professional, patient and extremely knowledgeable. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them and would use them for any future fireplace needs!

I chose to purchase from you because you were the only company that I found that offered the “high end” style and quality that I wanted – far superior to other companies. I had a few questions and you made me feel that you could provide whatever I wanted (Love the personal approach that is so rare to find today). Ordering and delivery was a breeze. The fireplace has been installed and it looks amazing!

I found English Fireplaces on the internet and, as they were fairly local to us, we went down to see them. We had moved to a house with a very modern wood burner set in to the wall and we wanted to find a mantelpiece that would provide a surround and softening to the chimney breast. We looked round the showroom with Paul and he was very knowledgeable about the various designs and stone that we might consider. Tom came to our house and provided a design which was just what we needed. We now have a mantelpiece and slate surround which looks great and we are delighted. Working with English Fireplaces was a very satisfying experience.

What a thoroughly enjoyable process from start to finish. We found you on the internet and were thrilled you were local to us. The choice was excellent and when we described what we were looking for you were able to show us exactly what we had pictured. Very efficient communication and very quick delivery and professional installation by your recommended fitter. Thank you for everything

Technical Site Survey
To ensure every fireplace is specified and installed correctly, we offer a complimentary site survey as part of our service.
Your survey is carried out by an experienced, qualified installer who will assess the space, confirm dimensions, review installation requirements and ensure the project complies with all relevant regulations. The visit will also enable a clear installation quotation to be prepared and an opportunity to meet the specialist who would oversee the installation, giving confidence that every detail has been considered before work begins.
