Sandstone and Bath Stone Fireplaces and Fire Surrounds
Sandstone was the earliest stone material used in the construction of fireplaces and surrounds. In Tudor times, masons simply utilised the same material they used to frame doors and windows – locally quarried sandstone. Sandstone fireplaces and fire surrounds became a regular sight in homes that could afford it.
This functional origin strongly influenced the design of the first sandstone fire surrounds – they were stone frames around the hearth. The designs were relatively simple continuations of the same themes that framed doors and windows.
Interestingly these traditional simple forms remain associated with fire surrounds made in sandstone. As a consequence, they tend to be found in older properties often located in rural rather than urban areas – ranging from baronial halls to former rectories to thatched cottages.
Given the history it would be easy to think that a sandstone fire surrounds lacks the sophistication of a contemporary limestone design or the splendour of marble period piece. However, a sandstone surround offers a sense of warmth, continuity and enduring dignity and for this reason is often chosen for imposing new homes – as well as renovations of older dwellings.
Bath Stone has a distinctive subtle, warm, honey colouring and has been a popular building material for thousands of years. Due to the perfect conditions which formed it (150 million years ago), Bath Stone has a uniformity which lends itself to grand architecture and it can be cut in any direction without compromising its strength.
However, its beauty in finer detail makes it a great material for relatively smaller works such as fire surrounds.
English Fireplaces has an expanding range of sandstone and Bath Stone fireplaces and fire surrounds with stone sourced from England and all over the world.
