Limestone is a natural stone with a rich geological history, formed over millions of years from layers of sediment and the fossilised remains of marine organisms. Its subtle variations, natural textures and timeless appearance have made it a favoured material in architecture and interior design for centuries.
At English Fireplaces, we carefully select premium limestone varieties for their beauty, durability and suitability for both traditional and contemporary designs. Our preferred Aegean limestone – also known as New Cream or Anatolian limestone – is characterised by its warm oatmeal tones and delicate fossil markings, giving each piece a unique sense of natural character. Its strength and consistency make it particularly well suited to the clean, architectural lines of contemporary fire surrounds.
We also use Rosal limestone from Portugal for selected designs, chosen for its softer appearance and distinctive qualities.
While limestone has long been used for handcrafted fireplaces, its popularity continues to grow as designers increasingly embrace natural materials and refined architectural forms. Contemporary interiors often favour the understated elegance of limestone, where simplicity of shape allows the beauty of the stone itself to take centre stage.

To ensure every fireplace is specified and installed correctly, we offer a complimentary site survey as part of our service.
Your survey is carried out by an experienced, qualified installer who will assess the space, confirm dimensions, review installation requirements and ensure the project complies with all relevant regulations. The visit will also enable a clear installation quotation to be prepared and an opportunity to meet the specialist who would oversee the installation, giving confidence that every detail has been considered before work begins.
