FIREPLACES AND THEIR MAINTENANCE

The York marble fireplace - click for more detailsKeep your fireplaces in good working order and looking beautiful by cleaning and maintaining them regularly.

Whilst your new fireplace will look very beautiful when it's installed, you'll need to keep it that way. Maintaining your fireplaces is not a time-consuming, onerous job, and it will make a real difference to the way your fireplaces look and perform. By following some simple rules, you could even extend the lifetime of the fireplaces in your home.

Looking After Fireplaces

Whether you have an open fireplace, a fuel-burning stove or a gas fire with a traditional surround, you need to keep everything well maintained to ensure that your rooms are safe and clean. Build up of soot, ash and other fire debris can be a fire hazard in itself so not only are you keeping your home clean - you are also protecting yourself and your family. Here are some basic things that you can do to maintain the fireplaces in your property:

  • Clean after every fire - when you are setting your fire during the colder months, make sure you clean the grate out every time. Only do this when the ash is completely cold, and don't forget to spread some newspapers out around the hearth to protect your carpet or flooring from soot and ash stains. Remove all the ash and sweep under the grate to ensure that everything is clean.
  • Sweep the Chimney - this is a job that is best left to a professional sweep and should be done after you have had the last fire of the season, or at the latest, before you start burning again in the autumn. If you are using your fireplaces regularly - more than five or six times a year for example - you should have your chimney swept every year to remove soot and residue and to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
  • Clean the fireplaces - the fireplaces themselves will need cleaning. Although you will be dusting and polishing the mantelpiece and the hearth on a regular basis, it is worth carrying out a more deep clean during the spring or summer - once you have stopped using the fireplace. Ask your fireplace company about the recommended cleaning solutions for the type of fireplace and hearth you have. Take the basket out of the fireplace if you can and clean and sweep the area inside your fireplace so that it is really clean before you set your next fire.
