The William IV marble fireplace is a more sophisticated chimney piece than the simplified Victorian and Edwardian corbels which followed later. This is largely due to the refined carving on the corbels themselves plus the panelling.

One of our London fireplaces on display in our Chiswick fireplace showroom. William IV (William Henry 1765-1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death on 20 June 1837. William, the third son of George III and younger brother and successor to George IV, was the last king and penultimate monarch of the House of Hanover. Corbel (console): a piece of stone jutting out of a wall to carry any superincumbent weight. The word "corbel" comes from Old French and derives from the Latin corbellus, a diminutive of corvus (a raven) which refers to the beak-like appearance The William IV marble fireplace features highly decorated corbels.
