CUMBERLAND FIREPLACE
The Cumberland marble fireplace is an accurate reproduction of an Adam's style chimney piece. It is very similar to our Ashbourne model but without the coloured inlay to the jambs and frieze. The effect is of a more restrained authority. More
Robert Adam (1728–1792) was a Scottish neoclassical architect, interior designer and furniture designer. He is considered by many to be the greatest architect of the late 18th century, and his work influenced the development of Western architecture, both in Europe and in North America. He was leader of the first phase of the classical revival in England and Scotland from around 1760 until his death.
Some doubt that Robert Adam designed fireplaces and chimneypieces himself but he would have overseen the design, so it is reasonable to add his name to the design.
